Black Crusade Display Base: Feb 2003

Black Crusade Display Base
The 18 foot display base diorama will be central to the success (or failure!) of the Crusade. It is taking a massive amount of planning on our part to get all of our bases to connect with each others in a meaningful and purposeful way. The ideal we are shooting for is to create a single scene, with terrain features flowing from on base to the next. This has necessitated us creating the bases at the same time, in the same location.

Starting with 18 feet of pink insulation foam, each member staked out a 2-foot section for themselves. The bases would be arranged in numerical order: Alpha Legion 1st, Slaneesh 6th, Nurgle, 7th, etc. The center base will be Abbadon, his black legion, and the Crusade's Thunderhawk.

Each individual base has to work separately, as well as part of the whole. With that in mind, we tried to give each base some army flavor so that it still worked when not put together with the other 8.

The Alpha Legion base will be a ruined 'park' of some sort, with trees that the Alphas are infiltrating behind. It will lead into...

the Iron Warriors base, through both a shared hill and roadway, decked out in fortifications, trenches and gun pits. The IW base leads right into...

the Night Lords base, once again sharing a hill and road, this time the hill is a graveyard, with bikes coming out of the graves. This leads into...

the Word Bearers base, which houses the control tower for...

the giant Thunderhawk landing pad, which is on the Black Legion base. Roads from here run right through...

to the Emperor's Children base, where the roads lead into a ruined temple. A hill and road connect this to...

the industrial park of the Death Guard base, which gradually slopes up to...

a blood red river on the World Eaters base, which continues with a road and hill running up to...

the Thousand Sons base, housing a library of knowledge up on a summit.

Once completed, the combined Black Crusade base will be one of the largest projects ever brought to a Grand Tournament. Hopefully 'large' will also translate into 'good', but at this point, it still just looks like a lot of pink foam to me!

And there's only 2 weeks left til Baltimore...!
