What are your impressions of 7th edition?

Hey Guys,

I don't think I've had the chance to meet most of you in person other than Lou, our forum mod. I don't tend to play 40K other than the hobby side of things. Anyway, every time there's a new edition I try to play a few games to see what it's like. What do you guys think so far?

My take? GW has never been about competitive rules, their philosophy is that they'll make some nice models, give you some rules to use them, but then expect players to come up with their own idea of fairness (i.e. what's acceptable and not acceptable to bring to a game). I think the unbound concept is just the latest incarnation of this philosophy.

I guess what I'm getting at is: What do you guys typically expect / not expect people to bring to your local pick-up games on Thursday nights?

I'd love to give the Baneblade a try for my IG, but I wouldn't drop it at random if I didn't think people were expecting it (I don't think anyone would be comfortable with an "all-Heldrake" list either), etc. I play IG / AM if anyone's curious. I'm not really a ran of all the mix/match deathstars going around but I guess that's the current trend?

We do a lot of tournaments as a club, so we often have some pretty tough lists running around so we know how to play against them at high levels. We also are often playing by the rules the next tourny is implementing, so it changes.

That said we also have a lot of gamers that play softer more fun lists. So we can usually tone down our list to make it an even match.

For 7th ed, I would expect people to be playing 1500, 1750, 1850 or 2000 pt lists. At the club the standard is usually 1850.

I would probably stick to battle forged armies, with unlimited FOC, allies, dataslates, lords of war and fortifications. I would even go as far as to say we are cool with forgeworld at this point, although be careful with units that in trial rules, they tend to be unbalanced.

Not sure about tactical vss non tactical mission. That will probably be a game times decision or roll off.

PS - Most of the nasty crap like all helldrakes just got nerfed with the FAQ, so I say bring it on ;)
PPS - The bane blade and variants are fine. We're all going to have to figure out how to beat them sooner or later anyway!

Welcome to the club.

Peter

I play themed lists but as competitive as the theme let's me.

So far, I like what I'm hearing about 7th. Hoping to play a lot more games this time.
