What's the deal with harlequins?

Postby -FarseerVinnie » Tue Oct 03, 2006 10:03 pm

I know they're in the codex based on this link... But I don't know much more than that.

4 point rending weapons? something like that? I couldn't find details at warseer. Does anyone have any? Do you think they'll get their own codex like the warseer people do or that this is it for them?

I dont see a codex for them any time soon. The info on them is still a little sketchy compaed to the rest of the codex, but warseer has a decent list of info about them. Sounds like you take a single squad of them, with certain upgrade specialists such as death jesters, etc. I like that they are returning as an option, and personally I dont need a whole codex for them, but I understand why people who used to use them as their main army would want them back.

No, I don't see a codex for Harlequins. Maybe after 5th edition comes out but certainly not any time in the next 5 years. The list at Warseer nicely summarizes what I've heard at this point:

Highly capable close combat unit especially in cityfight
Members of the troupe can be upgraded to Death Jesters, Shadowseers or Troupe Master
Harlequins Kiss confess rending on attacks.
Flip belt allows you to ignore difficult terrain
ShadowSeer has a power called 'veil of tears' which means oponents must roll for nightfight when targetting your unit.
ShadowSeer confers Hallucinogen grenades (plasma grenades) on the entire unit

It appears our beloved Solitaire is lost but not forgotten.

Are they elite choices? 0-1? Can someone build an army entirely out of harlies (ie can they become troop choices)?

Shoot, this is GW.

Give it a few months, by mid to late 2007, I expect a White Dwarf Chapter Approved Harlequin list

I think they reportedly have some pretty sweet stats too.

Very fragile, but will pretty much hit first on 3s and rend on 6's. I think of them as deamonettes that fleet of foot and shoot.

It's a funky squad. They have a shadow seer targetable under night fight rules, but they have no long range weapon (24" shieker cannon). They really shine in hth, but they have to get there, but I don;t think they can take a transport, short of falcons. I've heard nothing about any rules for venoms.

They might work as counter assault in a stay at home shooty list, but they seem like a confused squad if you ask me. I think peopel will run them as 6 clowns in a falcon.

Ken - they don't really do that anymore. White Dwarf is a catalog, and the only rules that you can use are "in printed books". It's a total shame if you ask me.

I assume they'll have holofields of some variety (probably adding +2 to a cover save, giving them them a 2+ cover save in cityfight). I imagine a squad running right through terrain with a 2+ cover save and ripping the daylights out of people to be effective.

I don't see why any sort of cc counter assault would want to be in a falcon, since you can't assault out of it. Sticking a squad of these guys in flamer range doesn't strike me as a good idea.

A few more "details" that have been mentioned:

The Shadowseer power that protects them from being shot is an "improved" night fight rule, allegedly being 2x2d6.

They can take up to two "melta pistols" (Dante must be pissed!).

And I'm fairly sure that they're a 0-1 choice.

They made a Death Jester model, so they should have some mid/long range shooting

so if they're 0-1, how do you get the special characters (shadowseer, death jester, etc)?

If you look at the image of the harlequin page from the codex in the first link I posted on this thread, you can't read it, but you can tell there are 4 entries, perhaps the basic harli, the squad leader, the death jester, and the shadowseer?

So I guess they all have to be in one squad. Since they're in one squad, and they have a 24" gun and a special ability that basically says you have to be with 18 inches (which, oddly enough, is the max move+fleet+assault distance) to see me, they're perfect to sit next to your dark reapers in a shooty army as baby-sitters/counter HtH.

Other than that I don't see a use, they can't assault out of vehicles, like expensive super-banshees.

Interesting...

I love the fluff so much though, I'm gunna have to take a squad of these guys (unless they're REALLY expensive)
