Is the Winged Hive Tyrant a must? How effective is it? Can it survive with just a 3+ save?

I think it's great. Haven't played in a while though, so take that with a grain of salt. As far as other stuff, you can go two ways... warpfield and all the extra biomorphs, or supercheap. The field is so stupidly expensive, though, that if you're going to be protecting your investment, it may as well go whole hog. Most of the guys I know end up with a 225ish point tyrant, but it earns its keep.

I hands down love my winged tyrant. I give it all the close combat stat upgrades (except initiative which I wish i had the points for). It's great with hormagaunts since it keeps up and both will be on your enemy by turn 2. I throw implant attacks in there for assassination. Warp field is a must. Beyond that there are no real defensive measures for the thing, just upgrades for it's offensiveness
