Report from GW's German GD seminar (sales data, etc.)

Postby -Papa Gino » Sun Aug 28, 2005 9:02 pm

Not mine - posted up by the admin of the Ogre Stronghold website. I find the sales data to be the most interesting (in particular as their financial statements don't drill down to individual products). Note that all sales data is (apparently) for the period of April 2004 through April 2005.

Quote:

In the last buisness year (until april 05) GW Group plc made an overall turnover of 197,5 (10% down from the year before) Mio. EUR and 20,1 Mio. EUR return (30% down).

45% of the turnover are gained through Trade (vendors), 46% through Retail (GW stores), 9% through direct sales.

40k makes for 30% of all sold products.
Fantasy 28%.
LotR 22%.
Colours 11%.

Top3 sold items per game:

Fantasy:
1. Ogre Kingdoms Army Book
2. Chaos Warriors Regimental Box
3. Dark Elves Warriors Regimental Box

40k:
1. Codex Space Marines
2. Rulebook
3. 40k Basic Game Box

LotR:
1. Warriors of Harrad Box
2. Mumakil Box
3. Warriors of Minas Tirith Box

Overall Best Sold Item:
Uruk Hai Warrior Box

Best Selling Armies:

Fantasy:
1. Chaos
(wide gap)
2. O&G
3. VC
4. Empire
5. HE
6. DE

40k:
1. Space Marines (takeing around 50% share of all armies, and three times as much as the second best selling army)
2. Chaos Space Marines
3. Imperial Guard

Lookout for the rest of 2005 and 2006:

LotR was called the third core game, gets further pushed with a new box set in 2006 called Shadows from the East (inculding a new army from Khand with Chariots).

40k:
Plastic SM Scouts
New weapon sprues for SM
Assault Terminator sprue
New supplement book with reference for all vehicles and weapons.
Codex Black Templar (new equipment sprue with BT icons etc. for normal SM, no extra BT SM box)

Fantasy:
all WE models till winter
WH Armies: Dwarves, Xmas/Jan 06
new Warriors
new Engineers
new Runesmiths
new Kings
thats all, new models are already finished and painted in a showcase.

no word about the 7.Edition Fantasy.

plans for more one-pose-McCragge-like models as these seem to be greatly asked for by new gamers. Complaints that this could scare veteran players away were sidestepped with the comment that one-pose models are ok for regimental use as only the regiment itself has to look good.

Yeah, but what will they do to meet their sales goals this year now that I'm done with that army? :lol

That's no surprise, Vinnie. They've stated many times HEs are one of their best selling lines, and therefore not in need of new models/rules.

Wow, I'm surprised O&G is their number 2 selling army behind chaos (which is no surprise at all). You'd think it'd be HE or Skaven or something like that...

I'm a little surprised that IG is behind chaos as the number 3 40K army. When I think about though, there really is no other army out there you see very often besides chaos and SM's.

Jeremy, they're going by sales numbers, not # of armies... so with orcs, you need to buy a LOT more boxed sets than, say HE. So even though there may be the same # of armies floating around, more $$ get spent on orcs. Skaven, I think, are generally seen as too "easy" an army to play by many players, and get abused on many boards, making them less popular in non-WAAC environments.

The fact that chaos is #1, AND chaos is a low model-count army means that even MORE people play chaos than the stats would indicate! But I assume they lumped beasts, daemons, and mortals into one. I'd be curious to see their figures on chaos broken down then added into their presentation.

The arrival of new dwarfs next year is perfect for me.

I'll play my demons until then.

Thanks for the data.

(Space marines and chaos fantasy should both be broken down somewhat don't you think, but certainly the arrival of new codex/army books picks up sales tremendously. They've got a fairly decent plan I think.)
