Mentoh Against Shooty Lists (Specifically MHSF)

Postby Leenus » Tue Jul 19, 2011 2:19 pm

Sooooooooo... There's rarely any tactical debate going on in these forums anymore, so I thought I'd try to get it jump started.

I'm curious as to what tournament caster you guys think Menoth should use against certain shooty lists at 50 points. Two in particular:

Ret with MHSF (with Ravyn to snipe + boosted attack rolls for one turn of huge assassination potential)
Khador with Iron Fleshed winter guard death star / nyss hunters

I mainly run the harbinger and psevy, but due to arcane assassin on the MHSF, they are basically dead in the water in many scenarios. I'm leaning towards taking eFeora in this matchup, simply because she is armor 19 with escort. For her list, I'd generally take bonded redeemer, 2 repenters and 2 vanquishers along with some zealots. The zealots have a decent shot of putting the hurt on the MHSF if they push up to feat/shoot my light jacks. It's not the most favorable matchup, but I'm not sure what else to do.

My other thought was eKreoss. Again he can get something like armor 18/19 to be relatively safe from assassination. I'd likely run him with vengers who have a decent shot of living against MHSF shots and getting into combat with them on turn 2. Basically the idea is to jam the board with enough threats he can't shoot them all and hopefully clear out enough guys on the feat turn.

I haven't played this matchup enough times to really know what to do, so I'd love to hear some advice!

Thanks homies

Dealing with the MHSF or the Iron fleshed winterguard, I'd recommend zealots with the monolith bearer. They are a phenominal counter to high defense, and you can't beat em for 8 points. Monolith bearer ensures that they will live long enough to get the job done, if you're looking to clear out infantry. Your opponents only defense is to back off, which will help greatly in scenario play.

eFeora's armor bonus from escort will be ignored by the MHSF, so it's not the best counter. Still, at arm 17, she should be fine. eKreoss has the same problem, with MHSF ignoring spell effects adding to armor, but his feat works well against those high def winterguard. Have you considered Vindictus? He can shunt off shots and works great with zealots.

I find the key is to not back off. You have to move forward and kill some of those models before they get to your caster. Here are a couple of things to try:

AOEs are the default answer. Bring a Vassal to get another shot off.

If you're going to run and engage, try the Daughters. Advance deployment and their speed gets them there and their DEF ties things up.

I like any ARM 17 caster. pFeora's feat is hit or miss, but it's great when it works.

pSevy casting Ashes to Ashes or Harby casting Cataclysm are worth trying if you want to stick with those casters.

Hey Steve, found the spot in the rulebook to clear up that Spell Barrier question. It's Appendix A pg. 244 in the Warmachine rule book. Hidden in there just before the Warjack bonds.
