Magnetizing Metal Models

Postby deFl0 » Tue Feb 16, 2010 11:06 pm

So I decided to paint some 250 guard all at once, and I will probably be following this up with sisters of battle and I need a much more economical system than lying them flat in one inch foam.

So I'm going to stand them up and stick them to galvanized steel.

Question is what size rare earth magnets do I need for round slotted bases?

Anybody done this successfully?

I've done fantasy metal models... no problems. Of course, fantasy guys have the bonus of helping hold each other in place. In any case, you'd use ZD-1's, as those are the ones which fit into the bases. Anything bigger won't work.

Here's the link. Pete, if you are ordering... put me down for 100 for $5. I have some magnetizing of my own to do.

I'd do 100 as well. Possibly more.

My suggestion is to go ahead and buy a thousand. Over the course of a couple of years, you'll use them all. Trust me (and that doesn't include gnoblar armies). And they don't take any room to store.

I did this with my guard when I played 40K. My transport case was a gun case. I used the botom 3.5 inches for tanks, I had all troops on a seat of metal which laid on a layer of foam, then with a lighter foam that had some give.

Take the rare earth magnets, cut them in half, ie 2 hemisphere's. You only need half for a guardsman. Then just magnet them to the sheet of metal. I had 3K of guard with tanks (the turrents and sponsons all were magnetized also) in 1 case that was 24 wide, 5.5 deep, 18 high.

Sorry guys. I literally placed the order about 5 minutes after Nidal's post. You'll have to buy your own magnets...
