WFB 500 Tournament Series

Postby KevinC » Sun Sep 16, 2012 4:51 pm

Hi guys, I was listening to Bad Dice and Ben Curry has this cool idea about 500 point tournaments. Anyway is there any interest in this?

I would like to run a 5 game, 500 point Tournament at CS. Games would be one hour each.

For the first one, I would like to do it with NO Restrictions. I think the small army point total, along with the unit type percentage caps are good enough. Though if this is proven to be not so, we can add appropriate restrictions for future tournaments.

I posted a mock tournament schedule below.

What are you thoughts and/or interest in this? I think this could be a lot of fun.

Tournament Schedule

11:00-12:00pm Game 1

12:15-1:15 Game 2

1:15-1:45 Lunch Break

1:45-2:45 Game 3

3:00-4:00 Game 4

4:15-5:15 Game 5

5:30 Awards/clean-up

I was thinking similarly when I listened to that episode. I'm interested. I think you should consider a shooting cap since there's little reason not to take 40 repeater crossbows, 50 skinks, etc. (I think it'd be silly to let people take this, ruin the first tournament to prove it doesn't work for future events.)

A good idea might be to make all unit types 0-1, so we see good variety.

Jarrett,

You're probably right. I'm thinking 0-2 for all Core choices and 0-1 for Special and Rare.

Also there needs to be a rule about a min. number of units. What about at least 3 units, not counting characters? This would prevent people from bringing just one huge horde, etc.

Kev, there's already a minimum 3 units built into the rules. You can't have less than 3 units in addition to heroes (p. 134).

I think you'll get the most variety from 0-1 per choice, but up to you. I don't think that restriction hurts any armies I can think of (some armies being generally weak at the point value aside).

Sounds like fun to me. Any exceptions for the "forced" armies? I play TK which would have to take a hiero, or Brets which would have to take a BSB (who ends up at nearly 1/5th of your points).

If you don't want to make an exception for those, I'm sure I'll survive, but figured I'd ask. :D

I'd totally be up for that. I played in a similar tournament at Games Day Baltimore two years ago. It was great, except for the opponent who showed up with his minis thrown into a plastic shopping bag.

What about this:

Choose an army worth up to 500 points, following the rules for 'Choosing Your Army' as described in the Warhammer rulebook (page 132). Note that you must include a minimum of 3 units not counting character units.

* No unit may cost more than 200 points.
* An army cannot contain more than 2 Core choices of the same type.
* An army cannot contain more than 1 Special choice of the same type and 1 Rare choice of the same type.
* A Bretonnia army does not have to take its usually mandatory Paladin, nor must they take a Battle Standard Bearer.

Skink Shaman
10x Skink Cohort
10x Skink Cohort
10x Skink Skirmishers
10x Skink Skirmishers
10x Chameleons
1x Salamander

I guess I'm wondering in what way being able to duplicate core choices actually enhances the small format?

Yup stupid skink armies are difficult to stop. Shrug. I'd rather not stop people from making a themed force and/or restricting them in core choices (too much), simply because of Skinks. Besides Skinks, what exactly would be so bad? Even with a 0-1 Core units, you can still make a pretty mean Skink force. I'd rather so say 'no Skinks may be taken' before limiting everyones Core simply because of Skinks.
