:lol

History is much better than fantasy.

Don't forget this: at the 1495 Battle of Fornovo, the Albanian Stradiots of the Papal League army bounced the French baggage train and pillaged it. King Charles VIII's wagons were among those captured. One of them contained his immense collection of porn.

The Stradiots distributed and re-sold the porn widely through the Italian army. This became a major scandal.

Despite getting the better of the Italians, the King of France was so shamed, he never invaded Italy again.

How would you dice that out? :D

What would you guess if you were trying to hit something? Average roll on the first die is 4-6 (not including the misfire) followed by a bounce between 2 and 10. If you make your range guess 4-6 inches in front of the first rank that makes sense. How much do I want to allow for a "bad" guess? I suppose zero. The guess should be dead on 4" in front of the unit. That's what I would expect from those who field cannons.

Good posts John. Cannons were one of the finest weapons ever invented. Correct me if I'm wrong John, but didn't cannons (and later the first machine guns) account for a disproportionate number of the "kills" during battle. (Not forgetting that desease causes the most deaths during war up to the 1st or 2nd World War.)

Yes. I forget the exact number, but during the Napoleonic Wars artillery accounted for roughly 90% of all combat casualties (killed and wounded). The equation really only started to change in the 1850s-1860s (when rifles became more accurate and faster to fire), then the MG and arty began to split the difference.

By the way, John forgot to mention all those instances when Napoleon's command group was targetted with cannon fire. Sometimes killing someone standing next to Napoleon.

# of inches?

If my guess and my opponent's guess is off by 5", I'd raise an eyebrow.

I've only had 1 person ever pull this on me however, and he was from my own club. It's never been an issue at tournaments I've been to.

What if someone is simply bad at range-guessing?

What if it's 4.5"? 5.5"?

You can tell when someone is bad at range guessing, and I'd imagine the 5" guideline is a sliding scale. 5" gets a raised eyebrow. 7" might get both eyebrows raised. :lol

When they overguess your unit by 5" but it lands perfectly on the mage behind them, then you know it's not just a bad guess.

Sergrum said it nicely.

If my opponent is constantly guessing the wrong range, or differing from me all the time, I lean towards bad range guessing.

If my opponent guesses on target towards my war machines, but widely overguesses when taking out my general behind a ranked unit, then he's overguessing.

It's all about the context.

In the interest of full disclosure, I once underguessed my whirlwind in order to hit a swirling melee between a mob of orcs and my own mob of space marines. I only did it because the guys I was playing was a drunk asshole and he was really pissing me off. He knew EXACTLY what I was doing, and I looked at him and said, in the most sarcastic tone I could muster, "Whoops! Would you look at that? I guessed I made a boo-boo. I'm sorry."

If you're not a friendly drunk, DON'T get drunk at a tourney where you're playing people you don't know
Jaghatai, on the Pale Rider event: I hop on this board to post a simple NEWCC question, end up looking at some interacial lesbian action and watch a religious meltdown. You guys know how to party!

Unless you want to incite a deliberate underguess from Nidal, that is
