Taking out Skirmishers

Postby -TheRooster101 » Thu Feb 08, 2007 1:05 am

When fighting against armies that use many skirmished units what do you think is the best war machine to use? Lately I have been using cannons since I can determine exactly how many models Im about to kill in the skirmish line, but is there a better one?

Depends on the army. With my Dwarfs I use an Organ gun. With my lizards I would use salamanders, or charge them with a charachter.
Fast, like kittens with jetpacks.

Dwarf organ gun is awefully good at it as I recall.

For empire, no idea. I don't think they have a great warmachine for them. But a mortar might do it. Even if it doesn't kill alot, it will encourage them to spread out, which can be helpful to you.

Magic missiles are the real answer to skirmishers.

Do you think catapults are better than cannons? Against a fellow player he uses many skinks in his lizardman army and I am trying to think of the best way to neutralize them most efficiently.

I agree about the organ gun since it pretty much shreds low T skirmish units.

Hellblaster is still fine at killing skirmishers - what it loses in to hit rolls it can compensate for in volume. So is the Mortar

Thunderers although not warmachines, are not bad vs skirmishers.

I like the hellfire rocket launcher, str 5 mortar... just have to have a little bit luckier guessing or fire into a large group.

?

A hellblaster kills about 3 skirmishers if you're lucky. Not exactly effective I think.

If you're lucky? What range? Within 12" and it's quite effective. Over 12" and what's the threat? Still a solid zone control. And killing 3 is a panic test.

Mortar is ideal for the points.

But then again, so is just charging them with light cav or a detachment

Seriously -

Warmachines in general are not the best way to get rid of most skirmishers. Light cavalry is ideal. Skirmishers with better WS or more attacks are also good.

Unless I faced skirmishers than can really fight, like wardancers, I used my warmachines for targets other than skirmishers. Mortars and cannons did work fine against Beastherds, but then so did crossbow fire at 15".
