If possible you just move the closest visible skirmisher an inch (or as close as possible) away and force the maximum wheel where it would be best for you. The skirmishers block the charger in a crescent shape, closest visible demanding a wheel to contact (thus luring the unit off) while the others curve in front of the unit to block a charge.

.....S.S.S
...S.......
.S.........
....AAAA
....AAAA
....AAAA

Unit A would be forced to wheel to contact the closest member of skirmsher unit S, directing their pursuit path. In a situation like this, a tactical (over)wheel just brings the charger more out of line with everything.

I see no problem with it. You aren't going to get a unit to turn and show a flank very often.

Jarrett -

Clarify a point for me.

If you put your skirmishers in a crescent like above and I charge you, you essentially have to flee to force me to change facing, correct?

I mean, if you stay put and I have to wheel to hit the closest model, can't I then use my free wheel to achieve a more advantageous facing?

Well if A charges and S flees, the path of the charge is traced from the center of A to the closest model of S, so A would then change its facing to travel in pursuit down that line of charge. This is, as you say, how you redirect the unit.

If S holds and A is in range then A's requirements are only to a) make contact with a maximum number of S models, and b) to wheel no more than once during its charge. It can wheel tactically to go in whichever direction it wants as long as it obeys these two requirements

The only problem with that strategy is that it only works in a vaccum. This outlandish formation can only be adopted when the unit of skirmishers has no other threats to contend with, and in a game, there are going to be more threats.

Got it -

So just one wheel when going against skirmishers.

Two wheels in general. The voluntary movement wheel, and the involuntary alignment wheel. Except against skirmishers, which align to you.

Hey man.. I'm high on antihistamines. I don't have to make sense.

Ahh - you just answered my follow-up question, Nidal. You made perfect sense.

Perhaps antihistimines suit you? ;)
