Steve: 3X3 detachments

Postby Flavius Infernus » Tue Jan 16, 2007 8:50 am

Steve, since you were shaking your head at me and saying "lost cause" when I bought my new empire book last week, I may have good news for new hope.

On Empire-com some players are touting the advantages of 3X3 detachments. Halberds or free company. This makes sense to me: they still cancel ranks, but they take fewer hits (small frontage) and can hide in an unchargable position between two infantry blocks. Because they are square, they can wheel to countercharge flanks no problem.

What do you think?

2 wide, 4 deep also works, arguably better. 80mm is not much to wheel.

Really depends on who you're playing. Against a good amount of stuff, like undead or other weak infantry, 5x2 militia are solid. Against Dwarfs, for example, you want the thin and deep formation.

What it comes down to ultimately is that people are too lazy to change the formation of their infantry most of the time. I think many people feel detachment effectiveness is not going to vary enough to be worth the effort of changing movement trays, etc

Oh and new hope comes foremost in the altar, steam tank, and giant. The Empire magic phase also got really solid.

I still love the infantry list and think it can work, but the above really takes the Empire in a radically different and nasty direction.

Gunline is also still obscene, though very rock paper scissors

Agreed. I dig 3X3 for aesthetic value. Keep in mind that 2X4, 3X3, 5X2 and you'll almost always be fighting against the SAME amount of enemy (4). Rarely will you see infantry more than 4 deep. That would be the only case where 2 wide has any advantage vs. 3, 4, or 5 wide as far as attacks are concerned.

Space is, of course, a whole other consideration. If you're playing an infantry horde, thin is good. But I can see 2X4 getting tangled up with the ass end of the unit whipping around into nearby infantry.

Does anyone have a link to the new article on detachments over there?

Thanks...

"Rarely will you see infantry more than 4 deep. "

I think that really depends on what you're facing. Often you wont see infantry at all, but when you do I think it's a coin toss.

If you're Fing around with detachment sizes to begin with, it's worth considering, and 80mm deep for 2x4 is not unwieldy.

3x3 does look nice, and that's probably the best reason to do it

Alph, there isn't a new detachment article over there. It's just a thread on their forum at www.warhammer-empire.com

I'm keen to try this, especially now that free company are no longer automatically a better choice for detachments than halberdiers.

Uhhhhhh... I'd still say Free Company are a much better choice.
