Well most infantry lack a good armor save, and for the same points and weapon skill you get double the attacks at 1 less strength. VS toughness 3 this is significantly better, and vs toughness 4 they're practically the same.

Armor save factors in less than from the front because hw + shield doesn't work to the flank.

For example, 3 attacks (since this is the formation discussed) vs Orcs w/ Shield in the flank deals .64 wounds from halberds, vs .66 wounds from militia. If you're flanking skeletons w/ shields you deal approximately 1.15 wounds with 3 halberd attacks, and 1.33 wounds from militia. Vs unarmored opponents, like zombies for example, you deal 1.33 wounds with halberds, but get a significantly better 2 wounds from militia. To throw halberds a bone, lets fight dwarf clansmen in the flank. Halberds do a whopping .5 wounds vs Militia's... wait, Militia also do .5 wounds. Halberds are just worse.

The potential for additional kills is also significant. Sometimes odds go way off, and having 6 attacks means you've got the potential for 3 more combat res than from halberds.

Can a detachment countercharge if the parent unit flees?

Can a hitty character join a detachment?

(see where I'm going with this?)

Vector:

The detachment cannot countercharge if the parent unit flees.

You can put a character in a detachment, but then it is not longer a detachment and losese all of its special rules.

Mattbird:

You had to be four wide under the Sixth edition rules. The have removed the width requirement of the detachments.

Hopes this helps folks

Detachments specifically had to be 4 wide in 6th? b/c no other unit was required to be 4 wide. It simply lost rank bonuses if it was under 4 wide

yes they did. Specific rule that the detachment had to be 4-wide in order to crack ranks. That rule was 'streamlined' out of 7th.

interesting. 3x3 is still just a minor advantage. I don't believe it will have any effect against players who know how to beat detachments in general. You can still combocharge them as they countercharge just as well.

Matt - You can't charge the detachment and blow through the empire lines liked you used to be able to. Imagine it and inch and a half back between two big ranked units. It's only 3 wide (60mm), meaning that no unit can charge it without getting within 1" of either of the two larger infantry blocks. Not even a single charachter on foot can squeeze through that space.
Fast, like kittens with jetpacks.

during a charge you are allowed to come within 1" of enemy units. :)

A single character can, but a ranked unit can't, as they have to be 5 wide (to be of any use). Just keep the detachment an inch behind the main line and alternate between detachments and main units.
