I really think you're worrying about nothing. Make them look different, explain what they are and tell anyone who has a problem with it that they can opt not to play you. If you bring it to a tournament, at worst, bring index cards and ask the retard if he'd like every unit to have a name tag if he's confused.

There are also tons of alternative weapon options available for fairly cheap if you're finding the prospect of converting both daunting and of questionable reception.

A plethora of futuristic and near-futuristic options: http://www.hfminis.co.uk/shop?category= ... sci%252dfi

In the grim darkness of the future the eldar are armed only with hockey sticks...

Agreed. If you're making some modifications to them (cutting down/adding on) and have a decent backstory to them, are using the same basic rules, and it's the same "class" of weapon (it's a range weapon replacing a ranged weapon) then I wouldn't have a problem with this.

Strict WYSIWYG tournaments might give you grief if the weapon sprue you're putting on your models has no real modifications and has just been retrofitted on however. Most judges should be understanding though if it's uniform across your unit though.

Having a legitimate reason to opt out of playing Weakland sounds like a win-win.
