After this ridiculous statement, your opinion on all-things Warhammer should now be null and void.

I agree with Aves. Empire without a stank or walter is total crap.

But the Stank and Altar exist, so I don't see why you're saying this. That's like me telling you Lizardmen are crap without Slaan or Terradons. No kidding, they're the best units in the book. You don't need both, but they exist to be selected. How is a Stank any different? The majority of Empire armies should run a Lector, and a Stank OR Altar, at a minimum. You don't need both Stank and Altar to win games, however, and more to the point, Empire is STILL a balanced book in all phases with or without the War Altar/Stank. You get 7-9 dice and 2+ bounds easily, you get plenty of mid-level shooting if you want it, and you've got cheap and unbreakable/stubborn Ranks and Flanks. Where does this add up to not balanced in all phases?

Empire's pretty solid, the problem is if you don't want an Arch-Lector things begin to suffer.

Be that as it may, the Daemonsmiths really need either 2 spells or an ability to default. Maybe both. I remain intrigued by the ability to mount them in a daemoneater, though, my planned playtest game fell through on Thursday, so I haven't had a chance to see how well it works.

The ability to default withe their weapon is the way to go. If I was a DS and I found out that I ended up with a useless daemon inside it, then I would sell/give it away and make a new one. There is nothing in the fluff that says they create these the night before the battle.
