Tourney results for new CD - please post

Postby DarkbloodSkullpulper » Sun Jan 10, 2010 1:56 pm

I'd love to hear how the CD list has been received, how it has performed, and what lists people are taking to various tournaments, large and small.

I'm likely to use the new CD list at Adepticon and the Colonial, if I'm not too far down on the waitlist to get a shot.

Allan finished in the 30s? and I was in the mid-40s at the Crossroads.

Don't worry, evil dwarfs definitely measure to see who's shortest.

I am curious how CD opponents at these events reacted to playing the list. Did any of them have previous games against them? Had they read the list at all? How did they react to playing it? Did you spend a lot of time explaining rules?

I expect them to perform above average in events regardless of player skill due to the lack of opponent ability to prep for them or have experience against them, so I am curious how it plays out over the year.

Eh, I'm an average GT player who did average with them. Larro's an exceptional GT player who won a GT with them. I think on the power curve they're very much a middle of the road army, and once the entire community has a chance to digest the book the scores will reflect that even better, but they're an army that won't shield a bad player or hinder a good one.

In general I spent five or ten minutes describing various stuff to my opponent, just to make sure they were clear on various things. The things I spent the most time on were Daemonsmiths and Annihilators, basically how the new Blunderbusses worked.

The only thing I got any complaints about was that the Daemonsmiths were too cheap for what they did. I'm not inclined to argue that, although every book certainly has choices like that. Daemonsmiths are very, very good.

Most GT tourney goers were at least passingly familiar with the book, half of my opponents at the Crossroads had either helped playtest or had read the book thoroughly. To be fair, I played Larro and Ed Maule rounds 2 and 3 that tourney, both of whom were involved pretty heavily in the process, so that might skew your average a bit. I only know one of Alan's opponents at the Crossroads, and Dan did help me playtest at the shop a bit, so he was aware.

Like I said, give it a year and I doubt the book's going to raise any eyebrows in the Northeast.

Well, this is no truer than it is with any new book. The difference is that the CD book, on the whole, is *worse* than any of the new releases by GW. And by a good deal.

I mean, Skaven were the newest book this event, and they performed pretty well overall. But their book also has very bent options, including but not limited to the Abomination.

I played CDs a month or so after they were released, with 0 playtest games against them or with them, and it took all of 5 minutes for Garrett to clarify what did what. We had a close game early on, and then my Vamps tipped the scale and things fell apart quickly for the not-so-fighty evil Dwarfs. The end.

Anyone trying to use "oh shit I have no idea what a Blunderbuss does!" or "oh snap a bound spell!" as an excuse is a whiner. It's no different than not playing against Tomb Kings much and then having them Incant on your face. You won't get sympathy when it happens then, so you shouldn't get any when you lose to a very-much middle road book.
